Another week of playoff football, and another familiar playoff opponent for the Bulldogs of Butte High School.

The Dogs are on the road again this week to take on the Bruins of Helena Capital, for their second meeting this year. Capital rolled to a 41-0 win back on Sept 30th. Joey Michelotti threw for 247 yards, and 2 touchdowns, with only 1 incompletion. Tom Carter ran for 155 yards and accounted for 59 yards receiving with 3 total touchdowns in the win.

Capital’s offense is good, please do not discount that, but the engine that drives the Bruins is their Defense. They get to the quarterback (To quote Bob Green) “in a hurry, and in poor humor”. Maxpreps shows Capital with 43 sacks on the year, averaging nearly 5 a game.

Butte High’s Jace Stenson averages nearly 250 passing yards a game, with a 60% completion percentage.  In the first game against Capital, he threw for 168 yards on 33% passing. Giving Stenson time to get rid of the ball is going to be key, and I’m excited to see what the coaching staff has worked up to give him time to get the ball downfield to his incredible group of receivers. The Dogs have 5 different receivers who all have over 20 catches on the year. Led by Senior Cameron Gurnsey with 49 catches and 5 touchdowns, this group of guys can make big plays when they get the football.

The run game must be a factor again this week. Last week Trey Hansen had himself a ballgame, going for 93 yards on 21 carries and a score, the Dogs will need that again.

This will be the 5th time the two teams have met in the playoffs. The first time was for 1987 state title game, the last was just 2 years ago in front of a (covid) thin crowd. The Bruins lead the playoff series, 3-1 we will see what happens this time around. The one thing you can wager your wallet on is this will be an incredibly physical ball game, and one you won’t want to miss.
