I have come to the conclusion that there are no ‘bad’ days to road-trip to Philipsburg, only days that are better than most.

This Sunday is going to be a good day to take a ride. The University of Montana men’s hockey team (Griz Hockey) will be on the ice at the Winninghoff Park Ice Rink starting at 4 pm for a free skate and youth clinic with the Griz. The clinic/free skate will run from 4 to 5 pm. Starting at 5 there will be a free Griz Hockey Maroon/White Scrimmage at the rink. This will be a great night of hockey for the whole family (especially if you have young ones that play hockey) at one of the nicest outdoor rinks in the state of Montana.

Griz Hockey is back.

Last year Griz Hockey was able to reform and get back on the ice, after a seven-year absence from Missoula. The hockey program is a non-varsity program that competes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The ACHA has hundreds of teams in 3 divisions across multiple conferences. Griz Hockey plays in Division 2 against schools from… everywhere. Some other programs in Div. 2 include Montana State, the University of Washington, the University of Utah, Army, Boise State, and The University of Texas, just to name a few. There are a total of 184 teams listed in Division 2.

As of today, the Griz are tied for 5th place overall with 34 points in 21 games (17-4-0-0)

Griz Hockey has a string of 5 home games coming up, you can find out more about those matchups, and get tickets HERE.

The Philipsburg Ice association has a long list of activities coming up this winter as well, from youth hockey programs to free public skating, and Adult Pick-Up games you can get more information on everything they have to offer on their Facebook page, or their website.

Know Your Butte History: Standing Mine Headframes

Dozens of mine headframes used to dot the Butte hill but most have since been torn down or swallowed by the Pit. Here are the ones that still tower proudly over our town.
