In town for the tournament? Here are some places to check out between games
Butte is certainly happy to be hosting two major basketball tournaments this week in the Western C Divisional at the Maroon Activities Center which runs Wednesday through Saturday and the Frontier Conference Tournament at the Butte Civic Center that will run Friday through Monday. If you have some time between games and are looking for some cool places in Butte to check out, here are a couple of suggestions.
WORLD MUSEUM OF MINING AND HELL ROARIN' GULCH
To get to the World Museum of Mining, go west on Park Street and through the campus of Montana Tech (please drive slowly on campus) and when you see the Orphan Girl Headframe, you're there. You'll find mining history, equipment and stories from all eras of Butte's mining history, a detailed recreation of an early mining boomtown, and even an underground tour if you are brave enough. Find all of the details here.
COPPER KING MANSION
Once home to Copper King William A. Clark and now a beautiful bed and breakfast, the Copper King Mansion is open for tours and is a fascinating look at the extravagance enjoyed by the wealthy during Butte's mining boom.
GRANITE MOUNTAIN MEMORIAL
If you are intrigued by Butte's mining history, you must check out the Granite Mountain Memorial which takes you right into the heart of Butte's old mining works and the site of 1917's horrific mine fire that took the lives of 167 miners. The memorial is touching and also offers breathtaking views of the Bell Diamond, Granite Mountain and Badger headframes. To get there head north on Main and turn right on Bernie's Way, just past St. Lawrence Church.
