Uptown Butte

Although many of Butte's signs from the past have long since come down, there are still an impressive number of neon signs in use and with LED technology progressing, there are some breathtaking new signs being designed. Here are a few of the signs around town that we think stand out.

Some big shows are coming to the Mother Lode Theater, like the Montana Music Series that we told you about last week. Well, Friday, March 15, another big performance is coming to the stage

The Markovich Family Foundation in conjunction with Summit Beverage has awarded a total of $100,000 over five years to support the Montana Folk Festival in 2024 and in the years to follow. This year, $20,000 will be granted to the Montana Folk Festival by the Foundation. This support will be doubled by the ongoing challenge grant of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation.

Chinese New Year celebrations in Butte have been a fun and historical event going way back into Butte's colorful history and festivities this year will get underway Uptown on February 10. This year will be the celebration of the "Year of the Dragon". Chinese culture tells us that the dragon symbolizes honor, luck, nobility, power and success. Those born during the Year of the Dragon are said to be courageous, tenacious and intelligent.

Tonight, the Covellite's Wednesday Night Free Movie series continues with 80's favorite "Joe Verses the Volcano" hitting the big screen upstairs at 7pm.

Friday night at the Covellite Theater and Uptown Lounge at 215 W. Broadway in Butte is going to shine the light on an up and coming young, local artist and afterwards they will give you the chance to take the spotlight yourself.

For the fifth year, Mainstreet Uptown Butte invites Butte citizens to come see the Copper Star in the County Courthouse and make a wish for the holidays. Between now and noon on December 21st, Butte citizens young and old are encouraged to make a wish for the community of Butte, or for neighbors, friends or families.

Jim McCarthy and Lindsay Mulcahy will attempt to make sense out of Butte's streets, their names, origins and more as they present "Streets of Butte" this Wednesday at the Butte Archives at 17 W. Quartz in Uptown Butte as part of their "Brown Bag Lunch" series of speakers and presentations.

One of the great things about Southwest Montana is that when an event starts growing, you can count on it to keep growing. Heck, we've turned St. Patrick's Day into a full weekend even during the years it falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday. This year, the Uptown Christmas Stroll gets underway at the Courthouse and while there will be music and dancing in the rotunda, there will be a lot of other choices for you to enjoy tonight. Let's take a look at what's happening musically over the next couple of days in our area.

The nominations have been received and reviewed and a distinguished Uptown business has been selected to serve as the Grand Marshal to be honored to help turn on the lights during the tree lighting ceremony at the Courthouse Rotunda and lead the Children's Light Parade.
