Montana's town nicknames. Where did they come from?

Montana's town nicknames. Where did they come from?
We've heard all of the nicknames of Montana towns before. Butte has been known as "The Mining City" since well before the first shovel of dirt was taken out of the Berkeley Pit. Missoula, in all of its lush greenery is known as "The Garden City". Helena, naturally, is the Capital City, while Billings is known as "The Magic City" and Bozeman is "The California City". Okay, I'm just joking on that last one. Sort of. Where did these nicknames come from. And are they still accurate? We took a look at a few of Montana's most colorfully nicknamed towns.

You may recognize Reggie Watts as the bandleader of The Late Late Show with James Corden. If you grew up in Great Falls, you may have even seen him around town as he was growing up. In fact, Watts, who was born in Germany but grew up in Great Falls, is seeing his stock on the rise as he has been blending music, comedy, effects and improv to the delight of audiences all over the world for years and his "Great Falls" Tour is coming to Montana this fall (just not to Great Falls). He will, however, be hitting Bozeman and Missoula.

Thanks to Logjam Presents, the Kettlehouse Amphitheater in Missoula has an endless array of top-notch concerts underway! Added to that list? Sultry singer song-writer Bonnie Raitt! Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Melissa Etheridge in 2000, Raitt will bring her blend of R&B, folk, blues, pop, and rock to the Kettlehouse on September 8th! Raitt is a ten-time Grammy Award winner and is on the 100 Greatest Guitarists and Singers list by Rolling Stone Magazine. Raitt’s career took off in the late 1980s, and around that time, I had the opportunity to see her perform LIVE at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle in 1989! My brother-in-law and sister sprung for the tickets (thank you!), and like that, we witnessed greatness on stage as Raitt played master guitar alongside Danny O’Keefe. To say it was a night to remember is an understatement!

You'd have to be living under a big rock in Montana NOT to know the Brawl of the Wild is this Saturday in Bozeman! The thing about it, though, is that some Bocat/Griz Fans are more prepared and organized than others. Hence, the ones ahead of the game purchased their tickets weeks ago for the game, had their tailgate festivities planned out, and booked hotel reservations way in advance. Serious gamegoers even know exactly what "team logo" layers of clothing they plan to wear to match weather conditions. Then there are the "winging it" Bobcat/Griz fans. The ones that procrastinate purchasing tickets for whatever reason and then end up with NONE. Yet, because they love a good Bobcat/Griz football matchup and want to be part of the festivities, they make every attempt to be there in the flesh even though it would have been easier to maintain some level of organization by purchasing tickets and a hotel room in the first place. Or so I've been told. Lol!
