Victim Identified in Fatal Weekend Collision Near Bozeman
Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer has released the name of the victim involved in a fatal vehicle crash that occurred in the Bozeman area over the weekend, offering clarity as the investigation continues and the community mourns a life lost.
According to Sheriff Springer, the crash happened during the morning hours of Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the intersection of East Valley Center Road and Harper Puckett Road. The Gallatin County Coroner’s Office responded, along with the Montana Highway Patrol and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, to reports of a serious three-vehicle collision.
Investigators determined that a vehicle traveling southbound on Harper Puckett Road failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering East Valley Center Road. That vehicle then collided with two other vehicles, one traveling eastbound and another traveling westbound, resulting in a violent and chaotic crash scene.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. That individual has since been identified as 73-year-old Danny Lake of Gallatin Gateway, according to Sheriff Springer. The Gallatin County Coroner’s Office determined that Lake died as a result of blunt force injuries, and the manner of death was ruled accidental.
The driver of the westbound vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center for medical treatment. No additional details about that individual’s condition have been released at this time.
Sheriff Springer emphasized that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing and is being led by the Montana Highway Patrol, which will determine any contributing factors or additional circumstances surrounding the collision.
In a statement released by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Springer expressed heartfelt sympathy, saying the office extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Danny Lake as they navigate this difficult time.
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly everyday travel can turn dangerous and highlights the importance of traffic safety at rural intersections throughout Gallatin County. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging drivers to remain alert, obey traffic control devices, and exercise caution on local roadways.
