Montana’s Place in the Happiness Ranking: How Does It Compare

Everyone in the world has a happy place. Where would that be if you close your eyes and visualize where you feel most at home, relaxed, and content? For me, Montana is my happy place.

Have you ever thought of which states are the happiest and where Montana ranks on that list? Wallethub, a personal finance company, has taken it upon itself to collect data to rank happiness in all 50 states.

How did Wallethub Collect and Compare Data?

The company compared the 50 states across three key dimensions: Emotional & Physical Well-Being, Work Environment and Community & Environment. After taking the evaluations of those three dimensions, they compared them with 30 weighted metrics graded on a 100-point scale; each state's average score determined its overall rank. Data was collected from 2024.

Where Does Montana Fall on the Happiness Scale?

After reviewing the list, I was shocked to find Big Sky Country ranked at #33 with an overall score of 48.2.  

Here's the full breakdown of Montana in each in each category.

#12 - Community and Environment Rank

We may have ranked in the middle overall, but we are doing well in the "work environment" and "community and environment rank"!

How Did Other States Compare?

According to the data, the happiest state is Hawaii, with a total score of 68.71. It is followed by Maryland in second place (64.67), New Jersey in third (62.46), Utah in fourth (62.20), and Delaware in fifth (60.42).

On the other hand, the least happy state is Louisiana, with a score of 32.97.

I am not fully convinced this data is pulled from a large enough pool of people, and I know for a fact they did not ask me! So, take this information with a grain of salt.
