MT Winter is Here: Join Bozeman’s Snow Angels and Make a Difference
This week marks the first significant snowfall of the year in Montana, which brings winter volunteer opportunities for those in need. As the snow settles into the area, it's a great time to consider how we can help our community in Bozeman.
With the amount of snow we received in Bozeman this week, some residents need help complying with the Sidewalk Snow Removal Ordinance.
"All snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks in all business districts within the city by 9:00 a.m. of the next business day, by 12:00 noon of the next non-business day, or within four business hours after any snow or ice deposit, whichever period is shorter." -Bozeman Municipal Code.
The city of Bozeman has a unique volunteer service called the Bozeman's Snow Angels Program.
This organization "pairs older residents and those with disabilities with capable neighbors, offering them assistance in shoveling their adjacent sidewalks."
Snow and iced-covered sidewalks are risky no matter who you are, but even more so for older people and those with disabilities. The program was initiated by the City of Bozeman in hopes of connecting those residents with volunteers in the vicinity to give a helping hand.
In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau said Bozeman's population was 57,305. Approximately 11% of its residents are aged 65 and older, and 6.2% of individuals under 65 years old have a disability.

In Bozeman, volunteering is crucial in making the community strong and cohesive. As the city goes into the program's third year, they have emphasized that its success relies heavily on its supportive locals.
As we settle into the snowy season, let's be good neighbors and remember that it takes a collective effort to make a difference.
