Western AA Divisional Wrestling at the Butte Civic Center

The Western AA Divisional Wrestling Tournament is here in the Mining City Today and Saturday. The Butte Civic Center will host the 2-day event for both boys and girls. Matches will start at 2 pm Friday, and then at 11 am on Saturday.

For the boy’s side of the bracket, each team can enter up to 2 athletes per weight class, and the top 8 will advance to the State Meet in Billings next weekend.

The girls will enter the Divisional Tournament this year for the first time, trying to wrestle their way to Billings. In the first years of girls wrestling, all athletes advanced to the state meet. But with the continued growth on the girl’s side, they will utilize the Divisional to limit the number of girls going to state. It will not follow the same mold as the boys (yet).

The number qualifying for state will depend on the number of entrants at each weight class, if it is a ‘deep’ class with a lot of wrestlers, several wrestlers might be at risk of not going to state. If it is a weight class that has fewer numbers, a higher percentage of the wrestlers will go. What the exact math of that is, I don’t know. Sorry. Butte High wrestling coach Cory Johnston walked me through it a bit yesterday. The one thing it does mean is every Butte High wrestler is going to have to wrestle hard to get to Billings next week for the state meet.
