We looked at the men’s side of the Cactus Classic earlier this week, it’s time we now focus on the ladies’ side of the equation.

The field is absolutely stacked, with 5 of the 9 teams in attendance receiving votes (RV) in the latest NAIA National power poll. The Frontier Schools in attendance are Montana Tech, MSU Northern, (RV) Rocky Mountain College, and (#18) UM Western.

The other schools in attendance are Benedictine University- Mesa, San Diego Christian, (RV) Rust College, (#20) Eastern Oregon, and (#14) Vanguard.

If you are not familiar with Vanguard, take a look at this.
Vanguard, and Coach Russ Davis, might just be the program that every coach in the country aspires to be like. Coach Davis in 27 years has been named the NAIA Coach of the year 4 times, in his time at Vanguard, the Lions have made the NAIA National Tournament 24 times. In those 24 trips they have made it to the Semi-finals 5 times, and the Lions hung the Championship banner in 2008. Coach Davis had 634 wins at Vanguard coming into this season.
Vanguard is a big fish.

The first game of the Cactus Classic, IS a classic. Two programs that have each won a National Championship will square off at 4 pm Tuesday, as The Lions of Vanguard take on the Bulldogs of UM Western. After that opener, it doesn’t get much easier for Western, as they play Rust Wednesday, and then Benedictine- Mesa Thursday.

The Battlin’ Bears of Rocky will play 3 games in 3 days as well, as they start the first day of action against Benedictine-Mesa. On Wednesday they will take on San Diego Christian, and finish with Rust College on Friday.

Coach Chris Mouat and the Skylights of MSU-Northern have also lined up 3 games in 3 days. Tuesday will see them across from Rust College, on Wednesday they will battle Eastern Oregon, and then to wrap it up on Thursday, San Diego Christian.

The Orediggers of Montana Tech have a matchup with the Grizzlies of Montana on Sunday, before they head south to take part in the Cactus Classic. The Diggs first game in Arizona will be against Vanguard on Wednesday at 12 noon, then on Thursday they will get the day underway against Eastern Oregon at 10 am.
This is going to be a fantastic run of games.
